Did you know that the United States National Institute of Health (NIH) has a division dedicated to holistic health, also known as complementary & alternative medicine (CAM)?
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is the government’s agency for research on the systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine.
The NCCAM objectives are to:
Advance research on mind and body interventions, practices, and disciplines.
Advance research on natural products.
Increase understanding of "real world" patterns and outcomes of CAM use and its integration into health care and health promotion.
Improve the capacity of the field to carry out rigorous research.
Develop and disseminate objective, evidence-based information on CAM interventions.
Most recently their efforts have been focused on examining yoga. Their video exhibits the safety and usefulness of yoga, and also insights into how scientists study the practice.
